It is the most common question we get on WhatsApp. The answer depends on environment, budget and how the tube will be finished — here is the comparison we walk buyers through.
Outdoor, humid or coastal → galvanized. Indoor, dry, painted or powder-coated → black. That covers 90% of decisions; the rest is cost optimization, which we break down below.
Two different processes share the name. Pre-galvanized tube is rolled from zinc-coated strip — the weld seam area has coating repaired by spray, and protection is moderate. Hot-dip galvanized tube is dipped in molten zinc after welding, coating the entire surface including inside — standard Z275 (275 g/m²), heavier on request. For anything exposed to rain or salt air, hot-dip is the specification to insist on.
For the same size (say 50×50×2.0 mm), hot-dip galvanized tube typically runs 15–25% above black tube. Pre-galvanized sits in between. But the real comparison is lifecycle: a black tube fence in a coastal environment starts rusting at cut edges and fixings within months, while hot-dip galvanized tube typically lasts decades before first maintenance. If your parts will be hot-dip galvanized locally after fabrication anyway, buying black tube is usually cheaper than buying pre-galvanized.
Black tube welds cleanly with no special preparation. Galvanized tube needs the zinc removed around the weld zone (grinding or acid), and welding zinc produces fumes that require extraction — a real workshop consideration. After welding galvanized sections, cold galvanizing spray or re-dip protects the repaired area.
| Application | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fencing, gates, carports | Hot-dip galvanized | Permanent outdoor exposure |
| Storage racking (indoor) | Black + paint | Dry environment, lowest cost |
| Furniture & shelving frames | Black (powder coated) | Clean welds, best coating adhesion |
| Greenhouse structures | Hot-dip galvanized | Humid, fertilizer-laden environment |
| Water & fire lines | Hot-dip GI pipe | Internal corrosion protection matters |
| Solar mounting | Pre-GI or hot-dip | 25-year design life expected |
