One of the first questions every new buyer asks: how much steel can I actually ship in one container? The answer depends on payload limits, product shape and packing — here is the guide we walk buyers through before quoting.
Every container loading decision hits one of two ceilings first: the legal payload (set by the shipping line and road weight limits) or the internal volume (set by the container box). Long heavy sections like H-beam and plate usually max out on weight; light long products like thin-wall furniture tube max out on space. Knowing which limit your order hits tells you whether to order by the ton or by the bundle.
| Container | Internal size (L×W×H) | Typical payload* | What it means for steel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft standard | 5.9 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 27–28 tons | Best for heavy dense loads: plate, H-beam, thick tube |
| 40ft standard | 12.0 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 26–27 tons | Same weight, double the length — long sections without cutting |
| 40ft high cube | 12.0 × 2.35 × 2.69 m | 26–27 tons | Extra height for bundled tubes stacked two-high |
*Final payload is confirmed by the shipping line and destination road regulations, and needs reconfirmation against your purchase list and booking.
Numbers from our own loading bay at Lecong Steel World — these are typical outcomes, not guarantees:
| Product | Typical size | Container | Typical load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanized square tube | 50×50×2.0 mm, 6 m | 40ft HC | ~1,000–1,100 pcs (25–27 t) in tied bundles |
| Steel plate | 6 mm, 2000×6000 mm | 20ft | ~26 t flat-stacked on timber |
| H-beam | HW200×200, 12 m | 40ft | ~24–26 t, saw-cut to fit or 12 m double-stacked |
| Angle steel | 50×50×5 mm, 6 m | 40ft HC | ~25–27 t in back-to-back bundles |
A single mill ships one product per container. A market supplier inside Lecong Steel World can combine tube, angle, channel and plate from different stock yards into one container — loading the dense product at the bottom (plate, beam), tubes in bundles above and between, with timber dunnage and lashing between layers. This is how a mid-size fabricator ships a whole month's bill of materials in one 40ft high cube instead of paying three partial shipments.
We film the container loading process on request — most buyers receive a short video of the door-closing moment with every shipment.
Send us your purchase list and destination port, and we will reply with unit prices plus a suggested container split — how many containers, what goes in each, and the estimated loaded weight. See the product pages for galvanized square tube, steel plate and H-beam sizes, or send your list directly.
